15 Common Sense Tips for Traveling Safely this Holiday Season

By November 21, 2019December 1st, 2022No Comments

A few simple steps now can prepare you for a simple and safe holiday travel experience by car.

  1. Ensure your vehicle is properly maintained. Have your car and tires inspected before you take a long trip?
  2. Check the weather before heading out to ensure the roads are safe.
  3. Make sure your car has basic winter weather accessories, such as an ice-scraper.
  4. Map your route in advance and be prepared for busy roads during the most common travel days. If possible, consider leaving earlier or later to avoid heavy traffic.
  5. If faced with an aggressive or troublesome driver, try to remain calm and let them pass you so that you control the situation.
  6. If you plan to drink, don’t plan to drive. If you intend to drink, always make sure you have a designated driver to make sure you, and everyone else, get home safely.
  7. Make sure you’re rested before driving. Plan the trip so you share the driving with your passengers and take regular breaks to avoid drowsy driving.
  8. Make sure everyone is buckled up on every trip, no matter the length.
  9. Children should always be in the appropriate safety seat, whether it’s a car seat, booster seat, or seat belt, whatever is appropriate for their weight, height, and age.
  10. Obey the speed limit, and adjust according to road conditions. Allow plenty of time and distance to react to traffic conditions.
  11. Keep a cell phone and charger with you at all times.
  12. Avoid distractions. Pull off to the side of the road – when you can do so safely – or find the nearest rest stop to use your cell phone.
  13. Keep anything of value (presents, luggage, laptops) in the trunk or covered storage area.
  14. If you’re traveling with children, go with them on bathroom breaks to ensure their safety.
  15. Have roadside assistance contact information on hand in case an incident occurs on the road.
